Node groups

Groups keep your nodes tidy. Make one for each place, purpose or person, such as Leeds office, Servers or Mum’s computers. A node can be in as many groups as you like, so reception-pc can be in both Leeds office and Windows PCs. Groups don’t go inside other groups.

Groups sort the nodes inside one team. If a client pays separately, give them their own team instead.

  1. In Dashcat Dashboard, open Groups and choose New group.
  2. Give it a name, pick a colour, and tick the nodes that belong in it.
  3. Add a description if the name doesn’t say it all, for example “Front-desk PCs at the Leeds office”. It helps anyone else who looks after these machines.

Names can be up to 40 characters, and two groups can’t share a name (Office and office count as the same).

  • One node: on the Nodes page, choose the tag button on its row and tick its groups. Changes save straight away.
  • Many nodes: on the Groups page, choose Edit on a group and tick its nodes.
  • New nodes: when you choose Add a node, pick its groups under Put it in groups. The node joins them as soon as it uses the invite link. If you’re looking at one group when you add a node, that group is already picked.

Choose the pencil on a node’s row to rename it, give it notes, or change its groups. Notes are for anything worth knowing about the machine, like “Sarah’s PC at the front desk”. Two nodes can’t share a name (Office-PC and office-pc count as the same), so your AI always knows which one you mean.

Your AI agents see each node’s groups and notes, and each group’s description, when they list your nodes through the Dashcat connector. So you can say “check the disk space on the office machines”, and the AI finds the nodes in your Office group (or the ones whose group or notes say they’re in the office). It tells you which nodes it found and asks before changing more than one. Offline nodes are listed as offline, and the AI skips them.

To do the same thing on a whole group, such as “turn on automatic updates on all the office machines”, your AI can run one command on every node in the group at once with run_on_group. It tells you which nodes it will run on and asks first. Each node runs the command once, and the reply says how it went on each, including which nodes were offline and so didn’t run it.

Groups and notes are your own text, and the AI treats them as information, not instructions. Dashcat Bridge (Direct mode) has no groups, so this works only through the connector.

On the Connections page, choose Choose nodes on an AI app and tick groups under Only these groups and nodes. The app can then work on every node in those groups, including nodes you add to them later, and nothing else.

The buttons above the nodes table show every node, one group’s nodes, or the nodes that are in no group yet. Each button shows how many nodes it holds.

Deleting a group removes only the label. Its nodes stay in your account and in any other groups they’re in.
